Having purchased the house 4 years ago. Our client always intended to make significant changes in
order to turn this into the family home they had always dreamt of.
The house in it’s current state was far from that. The existing rooms felt disconnected from each other, no one space offering everything the family needed. The lack of storage in the kitchen left the area cluttered and without any real organisation. With no second bathroom morning times in particular became a chore with no real option for improvement.
In desperate need on an upgrade, the initial idea was to create a larger space by combining the existing kitchen and dining room into one. Then with the addition of an extension on the back, form an open plan living area the family could spend most of their time in together. Separate from this the decision was made to add a utility room, shower room and hair salon.
We set to work to come up with a design that incorporated all of these elements whilst keeping to a realistic budget the client was comfortable with.
It soon became apparent that the best way to make this work was to relocate the kitchen into the original dining room space. This instantly threw up challenges with things such as drainage etc. but there wasn’t a problem that we couldn’t overcome.
This move provided valuable wall space for a doorway leading out to the new utility room. Then with the shower room to the front and hair salon at the rear, the layout was set.
The main focal point of the build is the kitchen. As this was now to be positioned in the centre of the house, careful consideration was taken to provide plenty of natural light. The inclusion of a glass roof lantern and bi-folding doors allows much needed light into what could have been a dark area, as well as opening up the space to the garden.
Keeping a more traditional style in mind, the client opted for a beautiful in-frame style kitchen, paired with a quartz worktop and heated porcelain tile floor. The large island and canopy over the range cooker really give this space the wow factor every time you enter the room.
Being a self-employed hairdresser. The ability to work from home is almost essential when you also have a young family. The addition of the new hair salon takes away some of the extra day-to-day pressures that travelling to and from the workplace can add.
The new downstairs shower room gives the family flexibility during those busy times of day. Whilst being able to keep the main bathroom upstairs separate when entertaining guests.
Our client has ended up with the family home they had been craving and we have had the privilege to work with them to turn this dream into a reality. Everything from the first spade in the ground until the final paint stroke was designed, organised and carried out by South Woodham Builders.
